Marine Order 504 is Changing: Get Ready!
Ahoy there, boating enthusiasts! Did you know that big changes are coming to Marine Order 504 (Certificates of operation – national law) 2024 (MO504) on 1 June 2025! These updates from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) are all about making safety management systems (SMS) better and more risk-focused for domestic commercial vessels (DCVs).
What's changing?
Simpler SMS for smaller vessels: Good news for those with smaller boats! MO504 is introducing a simplified SMS for Class 2, 3, and 4 vessels under 7.5 meters, making things easier to manage.
Stronger focus on fatigue: Clearer rules and a risk-based approach to fatigue management are being introduced. You'll need to assess and manage fatigue risks for your crew in your SMS.
Drug and alcohol management: A drug and alcohol policy will be required in your SMS to manage these risks effectively.
Updated emergency procedures: Make sure your emergency plan includes assembly station details and procedures for things like engine failure and spills.
Life jacket procedures: You'll need to have a written procedure in your SMS outlining when life jackets must be worn.
What do you need to do?
Review and update your SMS: Make sure your SMS is up-to-date with the new MO504 requirements.
Get familiar with the changes: Read up on the new rules and make sure you and your crew understand them.
