Jing Gandy, publisher of The Australian Boating Manual

The Australian Boating Manual, widely known as the “Boating Bible,” is celebrating its 30th Anniversary — marking three decades of advancing boating safety and maritime education across Australia.

First published in 1996 by Master Mariner Captain Dick Gandy, the Manual was developed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world seamanship. Recognising the need for a clear, comprehensive, Australian-specific reference, Captain Gandy set out to translate complex maritime knowledge into practical guidance for those on the water.

From its original edition to today’s expansive 1,000-page volumes, the Australian Boating Manual has evolved and grown, supporting thousands of recreational and professional mariners in earning certifications, strengthening judgement, and operating with confidence and professionalism.

Following Captain Gandy’s passing in 2018, stewardship passed to his widow and publisher, Jing Gandy, who has continued to guide the publication’s evolution while preserving its core mission. As part of the anniversary commemorations, Jing has recorded Dick’s favourite song, Sailing, in tribute to his legacy.

Jing Gandy also acknowledges the contributors who have shaped the Manual over three decades:

“As we celebrate 30 years of the ‘Boating Bible,’ I want to thank the many editors, contributors, marine experts and industry professionals who have helped shape this manual into the trusted icon it is today. This milestone belongs to you as much as it does to us.”

The publication continues to receive strong endorsement from across the maritime sector.

Described as “an essential reference and invaluable resource for all those who take to the water in boats, and those who teach them.”

The Boating Industry Association (BIA) has called it “an essential reference for every boat,” noting Captain Gandy’s immeasurable contribution to boating safety.

Volunteer Marine Rescue has similarly affirmed its value, describing the Manual as “a trusted publication… providing accurate maritime content for the training and education of rescue personnel.”

Jing Gandy will deliver a keynote address at the Women Who Sail Australia Gathering this March, reflecting on the Manual’s journey and outlining its future direction in a changing maritime landscape.

Thirty years on, the mission remains clear: to ensure knowledge, professionalism, and safe seamanship remain accessible to all who take to Australian waters. ⚓
