The Australian Boating Manual is an outstanding resource that contains quality marine learning and reference material for all boaters. It continues to be a trusted publication for Marine Rescue NSW, providing accurate maritime content for the training and education of new and existing rescue personnel.

The world of maritime is a better place because of Captain Dick Gandy and his legacy for maritime education and imparting knowledge, that continues to live on in this revised 6th edition of the Australian Boating Manual. This edition, under the careful guidance of Dick’s wife Jing Gandy and with Chief Editor David Hunter has engaged key subject expertise consultants that ensure Dick’s work remains relevant for another generation of Australian mariners to enjoy maritime learning.

Australia is a land girt by sea with a proud tradition of seafaring. It is appropriate that Australia has its own boating manual. For mariners just starting out on their journey or the experienced seafarer needing a comprehensive up-to-date reference, Gandy‘s boating manual has always provided the answers. The textbook is now in it’s sixth edition and is comprehensive and up-to-date, with the information supported by self test quizzes to assist learning. This book deserves a place on every seafarers bookshelf.

I didn't have the privilege of meeting the late Dick Gandy. I only know him from his body of work as an educator in Maritime Studies.  The 6th edition of the Australian Boating Manual is his legacy and an enduring  compendium for boat owners and marine professionals alike.

Since the publication of the 5th Edition in 2015, there has been an ongoing succession of changes to legislation, regulations and technology, so much so that ordinary seafarers find it impossible to keep up to date on a regular basis. This 2023 Edition takes all of this into account whilst maintaining the book’s characteristic teaching ethic and explanatory text, with up-to-date practice questions at the end of each chapter. The comprehensive index and cross-referencing between chapters bring this vast amount of information to a readily accessible and understandable format. And so Captain Dick’s legacy lives on, and the ABM continues to maintain its position as the “Go To” book for all practicing and aspiring seagoing persons – amateur as well as professional – in Australian waters.

Often one has to have numerous text books on the shelf when undertaking the maritime field of study. We are fortunate that the ‘Australian Boating Manual 6th Edition’ is a single one stop information resource for both amateur and professional mariners alike as well as all those who just have an interest in anything maritime. The 6th Edition would not have been possible without the vision and dedication of Jing Gandy and contributions from many experts in the maritime industry. Captain Dick Gandy’s lifelong commitment to maritime education certainly lives on in this latest edition. I highly endorse and recommend the ‘Australian Boating Manuel, 6th Edition’, as a truly exceptional and comprehensive maritime reference text’.
